BA (Hons) Health and Social Welfare
Introduction
BA (Hons) Health and Social Welfare is a vocationally relevant, interdisciplinary, academic programme. It is a new and innovative degree that has been carefully designed to help you develop the critical thinking and advanced learning skills which are highly valued by employers. In this programme we explore how social, cultural and policy changes have shaped, and are shaping health and welfare. Drawing upon a range of academic disciplines – Sociology, Social Policy, Psychology and Health Studies – this degree has a special focus on the experiences of older people in health and welfare systems. Year 1In the first year you study the broad historical, psycho-social and political context of health and social welfare provision. We introduce you to a range of theories, policies and practices that will form the foundation for your more specialist studies in years 2 and 3. You will also begin to develop and enhance the academic and professional communication skills necessary for degree level studies.
Year 2
In the second year you develop programme specific knowledge, understanding and skills: exploring important contemporary issues in health and social welfare and beginning your specialist study of older people (psycho-social gerontology). You will also complete a research methods module to prepare you for your final year project. Optional areas of study include: the relationship between language, communication and interaction; exploring the dynamics of inter-professional working; and a work based learning module which gives you an opportunity to apply theoretical and practical skills in a setting of your choice.
Year 3
In the final year you complete a dissertation on a topic of personal interest. You are given opportunities to continue broadening your studies through a choice of challenging, specialist optional modules. The emphasis this year is on you exercising considerable autonomy and choice in your learning.

This programme will prepare graduates for a broad range of career opportunities in the public, private and voluntary sectors. Potential employers include: the NHS, local authorities, and welfare services. Furthermore, demographic and policy trends within the UK suggest that graduate opportunities to work with older people are likely to increase significantly in the coming decade. Options for progression to further study include: the MA Professional Practice; Post Graduate Certificate in Education; and social work training.
Additional Information
Students have the opportunity in Semester B of year 2 to study in our partner universities in Pennsylvania USA. Year 3 could constitute a progression pathway from relevant foundation degrees.
