Primary Education 2 Year Accelerated Programme

Introduction

This is a new programme being developed for 2012 entry.

The Accelerated Primary Education Single Honours Programme aims to provide an academically challenging and intellectually rigorous course of learning that will be of particular interest to those students wishing to pursue a career related to Primary Teaching or Early Years Education, here or abroad.

The Accelerated Primary Education Degree is an intensive course that will provide you with a critical, multi-disciplinary and holistic understanding of education theory, policy, research and practice.  Through formal teaching, active inquiry, blended and work-based learning, you will develop your academic and professional understanding of contemporary educational issues, policies and debates, and your personal and professional identities as you move on to become the educators of the 21st century.

 Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

Students successfully completing this degree will be well placed to apply to undertake a 1 year PGCE programme to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS), which is required to become a classroom teacher.  Therefore, this programme offers an alternative 3 year route (2+1) to becoming a qualified Primary classroom teacher to that of the BEd programme.  Although you will be well placed to apply for a PGCE programme, this degree can not guarantee entry onto a PGCE programme.

Career Opportunities

On successful completion, our graduates will be equipped to engage with an increasing range of learning and employment opportunities associated with education although most will no doubt intend to go on to Primary Teaching [PGCE].  Other opportunities open to graduates might include Early Years Education, Community Education, Youth Work, Children’s Workforce Professionals, Educational Management, Welfare and Administration, Library and Information Management Professionals, Language Analysts, the Media and Publishing – both in this country and internationally.  The understandings and skills developed during their time here will not limit them to these professions however, and we aim to ensure they develop the generic/holistic skills that employers are looking for in graduates of the twenty first century.
